One of the ways in which CMA fulfils the above functions is through public education and awareness. In order for the capital markets industry to grow, there must be a substantial amount of interest and activity, which can only be possible if people are knowledgeable on the workings of the industry thus the need for public education.
Why get involved with Organizations? Considering that the capital markets industry in Uganda is still growing, many people still are not fully aware of the immense potential available for viable savings and investment capital markets. We also believe that the office workers, employed in different sectors of society has a lot to benefit from investing in the industry, but may simply not be aware of the available investment prospects.
Thus the Office–Office initiative is primarily aimed at promoting awareness of the various investment products available in the industry, and as a result, increase participation and also the savings potential of the working class, through the capital markets industry.
What is Office-Office? The ‘Office to Office Initiative’, is a public education drive in which CMA officials meet the staff of organizations to sensitize them on capital markets and specifically the benefits of investing in the industry. The meetings are held at the respective places of work, at a time convenient to the organization. The meetings usually consist of a 30 - minute presentation by a CMA staff member, and thereafter a Question and Answer Session. We have so far had such meetings with Bank of Uganda, The New Vision Printing and Publishing Co. Ltd., Total Uganda, Carr, Stanyer, Sims & Co.
Certified Public Accountants, Mbale NGO Board, Foundation for Human Rights Initiative, Nile Bank, MTN Uganda and numerous microfinance institutions. At the meetings, CMA officials make presentations on specific aspects of the capital markets industry and hold ‘Question and Answer’ sessions to respond to queries about the industry. So far the feedback from the meetings, attended by all levels of staff, has been positive, with organizations requesting for return visits. The sensitization is aimed at enlightening students on the workings of the capital markets industry, which we believe will be valuable to them in other subjects like Commerce, General Paper, Accounts and Economics. The sensitization also equips students with information to enhance their current and future savings and investment potential, in addition to offering career guidance on career opportunities in the capital markets industry.
