Overview
Research and market development is an integral part of the Capital Markets Authority’s mandate spearheaded by the Research and Market Development department. The research and market development function aims at providing timely, accurate and reliable information for policy formulation, regulatory and market development. The research and market development function also provides the basis upon which the Authority actively advocates for policies that are favorable to capital markets development in Uganda and the East African Community.

Policy Incentives

In order to promote the development of capital markets in Uganda, the government of Uganda has provided some policy incentives to various activities in the capital markets industry. These are listed below:

Income Tax

1. Collective Investment Schemes Income – Exempt so long as the income is invested
2. Investment income of the Investor Compensation Fund-Income exempt from tax

Withholding Tax

1. Dividends paid by companies listed on the Uganda Securities Exchange are taxed at 10% for Ugandan retail investors a reduction from 15%. - Stamp Duty & Other Taxes
2. Transfer of shares or debentures during an Initial Public Offer – Exempt from Stamp Duty
3. Transfer of assets to special purpose vehicles for purposes of issuing asset backed securities – Exempt from Stamp Duty
4. Interest on contributions paid into the Investor Compensation Fund established under the Capital Markets Act is exempt from tax.
